Further delay in start of Indonesian tribunal

In Indonesia, there's been a further delay to the start of a tribunal which will hear cases of atrocities committed in East Timor before and after the territory's vote for independence two years ago.

Mark Bowling reports that cases against militia leaders and Indonesian military and police officers -- accused of involvement in killings -- are now likely to start in October:

A judge heading the tribunal says he's only just begun examining a list of 50 judges to find a panel of five legal experts to hear the cases. The tribunal is expected to hear cases against 18-people, including senior military and police officers and pro-Jakarta militia leaders...accused of involvement in four crimes between April and September 1999. The cases include the slaughter of at least 12-people in an independence leader's home in Dili and three separate killings of refugees sheltering in churches in Liquica and Suai and the home of Dili's Bishop, Carlos Belo.
