Thirty-one people reportedly killed in Aceh
Thirty-one people have reportedly been killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen on a palm-oil plantation in the troubled Indonesian province of Aceh.
The Associated Press newsagency says the raid on the Bumi Flora palm-oil plantation in eastern Aceh coincided with the announcement by President Megawati Sukarnoputri of her new Cabinet.
A-P says it was the highest casualty toll in a single incident this year.
A local police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Sad Harunantyo, says a total of 38 people were shot by assailants whom he described as members of the Free Aceh Movement.
He says all of the victims were employees of the plantation and were attacked while gathering to be paid.
However, a rebel leader in northern Aceh, claimed soldiers had rounded up and machine-gunned 42 unarmed villagers.
