Australia is giving a total of 23-million dollars to help deal with the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

Graeme Dobell reports that the Federal Government has announced extra aid to help refugees and displaced people from Afghanistan.

The Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, today added an extra nine million dollars to the 14-million dollars of Afghanistan aid announced last week.Mr Downer says the deepening crisis means increased movements across the region, with up to six million vulnerable people inside Afghanistan. Three-and-a-half million Afghan refugees already live in Iran and Pakistan.Five million dollars will be spent on food aid, to buy more than seven-thousand of Australian flour.Other aid - medical, food, clothing, tents and blankets -- will go via non-government groups, the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
