Malaysian police increase security around American communities
Police in Malaysia are protecting the United States embassy and patrolling areas with communities of Americans and other foreigners after the US-led strikes in Afghanistan.
The embassy says they have assured staff they will continue to protect Americans and everyone else in Malaysia.
It says the United States is aware of no specific threat at this time against American interests in Malaysia, private or public.
The embassy was closed today for the Columbus Day holiday, and US citizens were urged to monitor the embassy's Web site for the latest information.
The government of Malaysia reacted cautiously to news of the strikes in Afghanistan.
Foreign ministry secretary general Aahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak says Malaysia will make a statement when appropriate, as it is monitoring the situation.
Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has repeatedly condemned the attacks on the US, but has opposed a war against Afghanistan in retaliation.
