Concern at measures asylum seekers are taking

There's concern that female detainees at South Australia's Woomera detention centre are taking more drastic measures to bring attention to their plight.

A lawyer for the asylum seekers at the centre, Paul Boylan, says an Iranian woman had to be flown to Adelaide on Monday after attempting to harm herself.

He says this week as well, another woman was badly injured after setting fire to an ablution block, with a guard and another detainee injured during the rescue.

Other detainees in that compound saw the smoke and went to put the fire out but it was only when they were doing the fire fighting that they found the lady in there and they took her out and took her up to the medical centre and she was the lady that was taken out by ambulance. I understand she was fairly seriously injured."
