US travellers to East Timor asked to exercise caution

The American State Department has urged U-S citizens travelling to East Timor to exercise caution by avoiding large gatherings and remaining alert to their personal security.

In August, East Timor held its first election since gaining independence from Indonesia in 1999.

The territory will remain under the authority of the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor until it becomes an independent nation in 2002.

The State Department says while the security situation has improved, East Timor continues to experience problems with criminal activity.
