Japan promises funds for Cambodia's communal elections
Japan has pledged 3.2 million US dollars to Cambodia for communal elections planned for next February.
The announcement was made by the Japanese Embassy in Phnom Penh.
The assistance, to be provided to Cambodia's national election committee and three local non-governmental organisations, is intended for voter education and training of new commune clerks.
The polls on February-the-third for Cambodia's 1,621 communes is to be the country's first democratic communal elections.
The national election commissions says more than 76,000 people have registered as candidates.
A spokesman says the election will cost 18 million dollars, with just over a third coming from the government and the rest from foreign donors.
Communal elections, originally scheduled to be held in 1995, have been repeatedly postponed because of a lack of law and political stability.
