Bangladeshi PM and M-P's swear oath of office despite p'mentary ban

Former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed led her deputies from the opposition Awami League in taking their oath of office today, backing down from an earlier threat not to be sworn in.

But they showed no sign of lifting their parliamentary boycott, called amid allegations of vote rigging when the party crashed to a humiliating defeat in the October 1st general election.

Sheikh Hasina and the other members of her party who won seats were sworn in by outgoing Speaker Abdul Hamid at the parliamentary complex in Dhaka.

The Awami League decided earlier this week its MPs would take the oath of office, but said it would not back down on the decision to boycott parliament.
