New Afghan leader pledges to continued fight against terrorism

Afghanistan's interim leader Hamid Karzai has promised that his country will never harbour terrorists again.

Standing in the Rose Garden at the White House with US President George W. Bush, Mr Karzai thanked the international community for the military and financial support which is helping to reconstruct Afghanistan.

The Afghan leader told journalists and Mr Bush the fight against Osama bin Laden's terrorist forces should continue until they are all gone.

To coincide with Mr Karzai's visit, President Bush announced additional funding for Afghanistan's reconstruction, pledging an extra 50 million dollar line of credit for private sector projects.

However the Bush administration has continued to rule out any direct US role in long term peace keeping in Afghanistan.

"I assure you, Mr President, that Afghanistan with your help and the help of other countries, friends, will be strong, and will stand eventually on its own feet and it will be a country that will defend its borders and not allow terrorism to return to it."
