Red Cross to investigate Afghan hospital deaths The International Red Cross is hoping to photograph six dead al-Qaeda fighters in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar to identify them and inform their families. The assault ended a seven week standoff as Afghan soldiers reportedly supported by US special forces, launched an assault on the hospital where the rebels had holed themselves up. The al Qaeda fighters were beseiged in a single first floor ward and had reportedly ignored at least two ultimatums and refused offers to negotiate a surrender. The six wounded Arab supporters of Osama bin Laden barricaded themselves inside a wing of Kandahar's Mirwais hospital in December, when the Taliban fled their southern stronghold. The men were armed with pistols and grenades and had threatened to blow themselves up if approached by anyone other than a doctor. 29/01/2002 2:03:03 PM | ABC Radio Australia News
