US praises Megawati for safeguarding US citizens

US Secretary of State Colin Powell has praised Indonesia's President Megawati Sukarnoputri for safeguarding the lives of US citizens in the country, despite radical Muslim anger at Washington's strikes on Afghanistan.

Mr Powell said he met president Megawati in Shanghai on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum last week and thanked her for taking care of US diplomatic premises and the security of US personnel.

Since the US and Britain launched attacks on Afghanistan on October 7th, there have been near-daily protests in several cities in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation.
