Two Indonesian police arrested over asylum seeker claims
Two Indonesian policemen have been detained following reports that police forced asylum seekers to board an overcrowded boat which later sank off the coast of Java.
The national police chief General Bimantoro says two brigadiers involved in the incident are being questioned in Sumatra.
He was speaking after a meeting with the Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri.
However, the police chief denied that the two officers forced the asylum seekers to board the vessel at gunpoint.
He says they merely guarded the asylum seekers.
More than 350 were killed when the boat - which was on its way to the Australian territory of Christmas Island - sank during heavy rain.
