US starts new raids, Taliban insists the fight goes on
US warplanes have started a new round of raids against Taliban frontlines after the militia's foreign minister insisted the movement was united and determined to fight on against the US-led coalition. As the military campaign against terrorism entered a 26th day, reporters said US jets renewed bombardments of Taliban positions on the northeastern frontline, close to the border with Tajikistan.
Increased pressure has been put on frontlines in recent days amid reports that the opposition Northern Alliance is preparing an offensive on the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. But Taliban foreign minister Wakil Ahmed Mutawakel has made a rare appearance in front of foreign reporters in the militia's headquarters of Kandahar to insist the regime's leadership is determined not to give in to the military assault. The foreign minister, who has been at the centre of a rumour that he might be involved in a breakaway movement, denies there's a split in the Taliban.
