No progress on Cambodia-Vietnam border issue
Cambodia and Vietnam failed to make much progress on the issue of unresolved border claims during the visit of Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong.
A reference to the countries' disputed shared border was contained at the end of a joint declaration, but contained little substance. Cambodian officials did not cite any breakthroughs as being made and declined to talk about the issue.
A spokesman for Cambodia's Interior Ministry, emphasized this visit was not the right time to discuss border differences, which he said are handled by a joint committee.
Cambodia's opposition criticised the government for failing to take the opportunity of President Luong's visit to make progress on the issue with its eastern neighbor. There are allegations of systematic Vietnamese encroachment on the border, but Vietnam has denied any policy of attempting to seize Cambodian territory.
