Nepal asks India for guns, helicopters to fight Maoists
Nepal has asked India for helicopters and arms to fight a Maoist insurgency that has left another 66 people dead.
Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, in a telephone call with Nepal's King Gyanendra, said he'd offer whatever assistance was required after 350 people died in six days of violence. The government has imposed a state of emergency in Nepal after the Maoists broke a four-month ceasefire with the worst attacks on the police and army since their armed struggle to establish a republic began in 1996. A Nepalese government official says the government planned to create a special armed police force of 15,000 men to combat the Maoists.
