Subdued celebration by Irian Jaya separatists

Hundreds of people have gathered in Indonesia's Papua Province, also known as Irian Jaya, to mark 40 years of their unrecognized declaration of independence.

It was a subdued celebration with no separatist "Morning Star" flag hoisted.

Last year's anniversary was marked with the raising of secessionist flags in Jayapura and other districts followed by rioting in which seven people were killed

The pro-independence Papua Presidium Council, whose leader Theys Eluay was killed last month, decided not to hoist the flag to avoid a possible conflict.

But Presidium deputy chairman Tom Beanal, vowed to pursue the
independence struggle to the end.
