Date set for presidential visit to Papua

A minister at the presidential palace in West Papua has revealed that Indonesian President, Megawati Sukarnoputri will visit the troubled province, also known as Irian Jaya, on December the 22nd.

No details accompanied the announcement.

It will be Megawati's first visit to West Papua, whose capital Jayapura lies 37-hundred kilometres east of Jakarta.

Local media say the visit may calm separatist passions following the killing last month of Theys Eluay ... the leader of the pro-Independence Papua Presidium Council.

Megawati has promised West Papua limited autonomy from January the first, but not independence.
