New documents show U-S supported invasion of East Timor

Newly released documents in Washington show that the United States approved of the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in 1975.

Former U-S Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has always maintained that he was never told of the plan by former Indonesian leader Suharto to invade East Timor.

But the documents show that Suharto informed both Mr Kissinger and former U-S President Gerald Ford of his plans while the two Americans were on a visit to Jakarta.

Suharto reportedly said that the invasion would safeguard Asian stability and the two American leaders agreed that the invasion should take place once they'd flown out of Jakarta.

The Indonesians invaded East Timor the following day leading to an incursion that ended in 1999.
