Afghanistan's interim leader asks for UN to approve larger security fo
The chairman of the interim administration in Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, has asked the United Nations Security Council to approve a larger international security force in his country and to extend its mandate beyond six months. While asking for the extension and expansion of the International Security Force, Mr Karzai told the council that security was the foundation for peace, stability and economic reconstruction in Afghanistan.
The force currently numbers about two-thousand mostly British and French troops and is due to reach four-and-a-half-thousand by the end of February. Mr Karzai did not say how large a force was required, nor how long it should remain in Afghanistan, but told the council that the creation of a national police force and a national army would take "considerable time".
