Japanese coast guard suspects people smuggling after collision

Japan's Coast Guard is investigating a possible case of people-smuggling after a weekend collision between a Cambodian and a Japanese freighter.

The collision occurred near the coast of Wakayama Prefecture in southwest Japan.

The one-thousand-ton Cambodian ship later sank, but the ship's 12 crew and 29 passengers, all Chinese, were rescued and are being questioned under suspicion of trying to enter the country illegally.

The Japanese ship and its four crew members were uninjured.
