Afghan militiamen say most of Tora Bora taken

An Afghan militia commander says most of the Tora Bora mountain complex where Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda fighters have been hiding has been captured.

Afghan military commander, Hazrat Ali, says militia forces control virtually all of the Melawa and Tora Bora area, adding that al-Qaeda still held the very top of the mountain.

It comes on the seventh day of a fierce offensive by U-S warplanes and Afghan militiamen on the Tora Bora area, which is riddled with caves used by Afghan mujahideen in the 1979-89 war against the former Soviet Union.

Local commanders are convinced that bin Laden, who is wanted for the September 11 terrorist atrocities in the United States, is holed up in the Tora Bora area with his followers.
