Burma to release 200 Chinese prisoners on eve of visit by Chinese lead
Burma says it will release more than 200 Chinese prisoners on the eve of a visit by Chinese President Jiang Zemin.
Mr Jiang, the first Chinese president to travel to the military-ruled state since 1985, arrives in Burma later today, for a three day visit.
Burmese officials did not say why the prisoners had been jailed, but an opposition report said some had been arrested on charges of illegal entry. Chinese officials say Mr Jiang's visit is aimed at "enhancing understanding, friendship and cooperation" between the two countries and would include the signing of bilateral agreements.
