US concerned about Cambodian election violence
The United States has urged the Cambodian government to investigate the killings of 11 people in violence which has been linked to Cambodia's district elections due in February. US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher called on Prime Minister Hun Sen's government to find the culprits and bring them to justice. Mr Boucher says America is concerned by the reports of election-related violence and intimidation in the run-up to Cambodia's commune council elections on February the 3rd.
Quoting "credible" reports by non-government organizations and the United Nations human rights centre, he says around half of the killings were politically motivated assassinations of opposition candidates and activists.
Mr Boucher says the US hopes all parties will accept the outcome of the polls, in which Cambodians will for the first time select local councils in more than 1,600 communes.
