Australia calls for fresh action by people-smuggling conference

Australia says the people-smuggling conference should produce fresh action across the region for laws to ban trafficking.

Graeme Dobell reports the meeting of more than 50-countries will conclude today in Bali with a joint statement from the co-chairs Australia and Indonesia:

"The Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, says countries across Southeast Asia are more ready now than in the past to confront the danger of people smuggling by crime syndicates: "It is a big issue for countries such Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines and so on. It is a big issue." Mr Downer says countries such as Indonesia are ready, for the first time, to enact laws to ban people trafficking: "Certainly the Indonesians are saying that they need to make people smuggling a crime."
