U-S urges India and Pakistan to tone down rhetoric
The United States has called on India and Pakistan to cooperate in fighting terrorism.
Washington has warned that cross-border tensions sparked by last week's attack on the Indian parliament could spiral out of control.
The White House and the State Department said the two South Asian nuclear rivals needed to weigh carefully their steps in dealing with the suicide assault, which India blames on Pakistan-based Islamic militants.
Both countries were urged to tone down their rhetoric, especially about claims as to who was responsible for the attack and preparations to go after the perpetrators.
A White House spokesman, Ari Fleischer says India has a legitimate right to self-defence, while the State Department says Washington is in close touch with both countries, counseling restraint.
