China back Tung Chee-hwa for 2nd term as Hong Kong chief
Chinese president Jiang Zemin says he is "convinced" visiting Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa will be re-elected for a second term in office. Mr Jiang says Tung enjoyed "high prestige" in Hong Kong.
However, recent opinion polls have shown fewer than one in six of the territory's population want him to carry on as leader. The former shipping magnate was given Jiang's seal of approval for another five-year term soon after arriving in Beijing to present an annual work report to the central leadership. Mr Tung said Chinese leaders also backed a proposal to set up a free trade zone in southern China which could incorporate Hong Kong, the former Portuguese territory of Macau and neighboring Guangdong province.
