North Korea denounces Japan's sinking of suspected "spy" boat

North Korea says it's a rumour that a ship sunk by the Japan coast guard was a Pyongyang spy ship and has described the act as nothing but piracy.

The boat sank at the weekend after taking a direct hit in the hull while in the waters of China's exclusive economic zone.

However, coast guard officials says the crew might have blown it up to evade capture.

There are no clues to identify the ship as North Korean although the coast guard retrieved the bodies of two Asian men who carried items with Korean characters on them.

About a dozen other crew members of the sunken boat remain unaccounted for.
