Tensions increase between Pakistan and India as summit delayed

The South Asian leaders' summit being held in the Nepal capital Kathmandu has been delayed following the late arrival of Pakistani President Pervaz Musharraf.

Edmund Roy reports ... any hope of an informal dialogue between India and Pakistan has disappeared.

"The summit ... which is the first opportunity for the leaders of India and Pakistan to meet after the current crisis on the subcontinent began late last month ... has been put off for another day. A retreat for the seven South Asian leaders scheduled for Saturday has now been cancelled, and would have been one of the few opportunities for President Musharraf and Prime Minister Vajpayee to meet in private. But Indian officials are still insisting no bilateral talks will take place until Pakistan stops its support for Islamic militant groups. Both sides are also continuing to position troops on the border in preparation for a military confrontation. Edmund Roy, New Delhi."
