US authorises setting up of maximum security prison in Cuba

The United States has authorised the setting up of a maximum security prison in Cuba for Afghan detainees.

The prison is being established at the U-S base at Guantanamo Bay -- described as the "least worst" location by U-S Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

When fully operational it will hold up to two thousand al-Qaeda and Taliban prisoners, the first of whom are expected to be transferred there shortly.
