A Japanese city considers setting up a whale farm

A city in Japan wants to establish the world`s first whale farm.

As Tokyo Correspondent, Mark Simkin reports, two-thousand square meters of ocean would be set aside for the giant mammals.

The city of Hirado, in southern Japan, has a long history of whaling. But now that the international whaling commission has limited the amount of whaling that is legally allowed, the town has come up with a new plan. It wants to set up a whale farm. Minke whales would be caught in nets, then taken to a fenced off area of ocean near the city. Under the plan, around 2000 sq metres would be set aside. The local government will spend 14,000 dollars on a feasibility study.
