US Senator calls for mediation in Kashmir dispute

Senior United States Senator Joseph Lieberman, says mediation is essential to defuse the current crisis between India and Pakistan.

Leading a delegation of American senators now in Pakistan, Senator Lieberman told journalists that a planned address to the nation by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf will do a lot to calm the current military build up.

He says Mr Musharraf's speech this week will begin a new chapter in the Kashmir dispute, but both countries need help to move back from the brink of a serious conflict:

India however, says there is no room for third-party mediation in the dispute.

"This speech by President Musharraf, I can't stress enough, is full of potential, but to take advantage of that potential, it really requires representatives of the world, who are interested and very concerned about what's happening here to be right on the ground to try to seize the moment. I believe that a mediating presence is necessary. I worry that without it, the progress that we all hope for will not occur."
