First of Vietnamese nationals in Australian jails set to go home
The first of up to 50 Vietnamese nationals being detained in Australian jails are set to be deported today.
The Immigration Department has confirmed that three Vietnamese men are to be deported, with 33 others awaiting deportation.
Their advocate Thang Ngo says they've already served sentences for their crimes in Australia, but could face further detention when they return.
He says the three being flown back today are refugees from the Vietnam War, have permanent residency in Australia and do not want to go back.
Councillor Ngo, from Fairfield in western Sydney, says the Australian Government needs to give assurances about their future.
The Immigration Department says it can't comment about individual cases because of privacy concerns, but there'd be no removal while a deportee was seeking a review of their case.
I can't seem to get any guarantees out of the Australian Government that they will monitor their progress, whether these people will be persecuted or not, we have to remember that these people ran away from Vietnam claiming that they will be persecuted if they stay in Vietnam.
