Foreigners to enjoy cheaper Vietnam air fares
Foreigners will enjoy cheaper domestic air fares in Vietnam next year as the government begins phasing out the 90 percent surcharge currently paid by non-nationals.
In contrast, the fares paid by Vietnamese nationals will rise as the government moves to eliminate the old two-tier pricing system by January 2004.
Nguyen Chan, spokesman for the state-run Vietnam Airlines, says that to cushion the impact of the fare adjustment for Vietnamese, it'll be introduced in stages over the next three years. At present, a one-way economy ticket from Hanoi to the commercial capital of Ho Chi Minh City costs 127 US dollars for foreigners but only 67 US dollars for Vietnamese.
The move is seen as an attempt by the government to maintain tourism growth in the wake of the September 11 terror attacks in the United States.
