Vietnam rice exports fall by 10 percent

Vietnam's earnings from rice exports dropped 10 percent in 2001 compared to the previous year amid the continuing slump in the agricultural sector.

Vietnam earned 460 millions dollars in rice export revenues, with an export volume of 3.55 million tonnes.

Rice prices have fallen by over 40 percent since 1998, reducing revenue from rice exports by 220 million dollars.

Vietnam is the world's second largest rice exporter, after Thailand.

Rice is Vietnam's main agricultural export and its main foreign currency earner.
