Documents show Seoul urged Washington to attack Pyongyang in 1968
Declassified American documents show South Korea had urged the US to attack North Korea in 1968 for seizing its spy ship.
The seizure of the USS Pueblo in January 1968 sparked off a major cold war crisis.
South Korean dictator Park Chung Hee wrote to then US president Lyndon B Johnson urging him to take strong military steps against North Korea's provocative act.
But president Johnson while expressing his concerns refused to order a military strike.
Historians say the North only avoided a military strike because the United States at the time was at war in Vietnam.
