Japanese prime minister in Thailand

Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has arrived in Thailand, on the third leg of a five nation southeast Asian tour that has also taken in Malaysia and the Philippines.

Before a meeting with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, he said members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations should expand relations with China, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

He also promised that Japan would play a strong role in the development of ASEAN members.

Mr Koizumi leaves for Indonesia later today and will finish his trip in Singapore.
