US offers to help Japan over suspected North Korean spy vessel
The United States has offered to help Japan recover a suspected North Korean spy ship which sank last month after a gun battle with a Japanese coastguard vessel.
An American State Department spokesman says although Japan has not asked for any assistance, if they have any requests regarding recovery, Washington is happy to help.
The remarks came after U-S Deputy Secretary of State, Richard Armitage, said he believed the vessel to be North Korean.
The boat, apparently camouflaged as a fishing vessel and carrying a crew of about 15 people, sank in China's exclusive 200-nautical-mile economic zone after the gun battle on December the 22nd.
It was first spotted in Japan's exclusive zone and tried to escape a pursuit by a flotilla of Japanese coastguard patrol ships.
