Vietnam rejects human rights' criticism
Vietnam has strongly criticised a new human rights report which said the government had taken "major steps backward".
The annual report issued by New York-based Human Rights Watch singled out the Vietnamese government's record on protecting religious freedom.
It specifically condemned the government's arrest last February of dozens of ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands who participated in mass protests over land and religious rights.
The report said authorities also detained, harassed or arrested Buddhist, Catholic and Protestant dissidents, as well as former Communist Party veterans-turned-critics.
A spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry, Phan Thuy Thanh rejected the report as completely untrue and groundless.
