Delegates gather in Tokyo to formulate plan for Afghanistan

Representatives from 50 countries and international agencies are gathering in Tokyo to formulate a reconstruction plan for Afghanistan.

As Tokyo Correspondent, Mark Simkin reports, the challenges are enormous.

Afghanistan has been ravaged by war for two decades… now, finally, international attention is focusing on how to rebuild the shattered country. The challenges are huge… basic infrastructure has collapsed, 70% of the population is malnourished and two thirds is illiterate. The World Bank estimates the cost of rebuilding will be fifteen billion US dollars over ten years. The intermim Afghan government believes the real figure will be much higher.
