Afghanistan's interim leader arrives in Japan for aid conference

The interim leader of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, has arrived in Japan to lobby for billions of dollars in aid for his country.

Mr Karzai will attend a two-day international conference in Tokyo on the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

The meeting brings together delegates from 54 countries, including Australia, and 18 international agencies.

The Afghan leader says he expects to return to his war-battered nation with full hands.

"I will be conveying to the donor nations and to the people of Japan the extent of destruction in Afghanistan and the extent of the needs of the people of Afghanistan and request them to see to it that these needs are taken care of and addressed."
