New Zealand government would welcome Koizumi visit
The New Zealand government says it would welcome a visit by Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi as part of an effort to forge a proposed Asian economic alliance. Mr Koizumi proposed forming a regional economic alliance - including a free trade pact - during his recent tour of five Southeast Asian countries. The Japanese leader made the proposal when he met with Philippines President Gloria Arroyo in Manila last week. Mr Koizumi is understood to want to visit New Zealand and Australia in May.
However, a spokesman for New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark says there's been no formal approach from Tokyo.
The New Zealand leader visited Japan late last year and extended an invitation to her Japanese counterpart.
