India's FM "trying" to avoid war with Pakistan
India's foreign minister, Jaswant Singh says he is trying to avoid war with Pakistan over terrorism in disputed Kashmir. But, he says India is unsure how fast Pakistan's president, whom he called a "military dictator", can change his nation's policies. Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf announced on January 12th that he would not tolerate terrorism aimed at ending Indian control in Kashmir, the region divided between the two countries and the cause of two of their three wars. General Musharraf, head of Pakistan's armed forces, seized power in a bloodless coup in October 1999, and named himself president last year. Mr Singh said the reforms that General Musharraf outlined - requiring government oversight of religious schools and mosques and ending Islamic militant activity - would take "two or three" successive governments to implement.
