Heavy fighting breaks out between warlords in eastern Afghanistan
Heavy fighting has reportedly erupted in eastern Afghanistan as rival warlords battled for control of Paktia province.
The AFP news agency says US warplanes were circling overhead as mortar, rocket and small arms fire rocked the town of Gardez, causing hundreds of panicked residents to flee. AFP says the fighting appeared to be concentrated on the governor's mansion.
Fleeing residents said men loyal to rival ethnic Pashtun warlords Padsha Khan and Saif Ullah began fighting around midday. Mr Khan was appointed recently to take up the governorship of Paktia province, bordering Pakistan, by Afghan interim leader Hamid Karzai. But Mr Ullah had already taken control of Gardez, following the withdrawal of the Taliban militia late last year.
