US accuses Iran of meddling in Afghanistan

The American Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has accused Iran of contributing to instability in Afghanistan, citing reports that Tehran is supplying weapons to factions there.

Mr Rumsfeld provided no details on Iran's alleged arms supplies, or other activities in Afghanistan, other than to say such actions were notably unhelpful.

His comments followed President George W. Bush's State of the Union address to Congress, naming Iran, Iraq and North Korea as an "axis of evil" because of their links to terrorism and efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction.
