UN recommends renewing mission in East Timor
United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has recommended extending the mandate of the U-N Transitional Administration in East Timor until the territory officially becomes independent on May 20th.
In a Security Council report just released, Mr Annan also suggests UNTAET be replaced by another U-N mission for two years as soon as the territory gains independence.
Mr Annan says it's essential the commitment be met in full and that the tasks which have been so well advanced, be brought to fruition.
He says the close partnership between East Timor and the international community will remain essential for the continued stability and development of the country.
