Afghanistan to get extra American aid

The United States has pledged additional funding for reconstruction in war torn Afghanistan.

President George W. Bush announced the additional funds as he welcomed Afghanistan's interim leader to the White House.

Tim Lester reports from Washington.

Washington has already pledged almost 300-million US dollars over the next year to Afghanistan's reconstruction. In a Rose Garden press conference with Afghanistan's leader Hamid Karzai the President pledged a further 50 million as a line of credit for private sector projects. However the Bush administration has ruled out any direct US role in long term peace keeping in Afghanistan. "The United States will continue to work closely with these forces and provide support for their mission. We will also support programs to train new police officers and to help establish and train an Afghanistan national military. " In reply, Mr Karzai stressed his support for the US-led action against terrorism.
