South Korea's FM sacked
South Korea's Foreign Minister Han Seung-Soo has been sacked as he flew back to Seoul from key talks with US officials on North Korea ahead of a US-South Korean summit. Mr Han, who has been in office less than a year, was a victim of the growing war of words between the United States and North Korea.
President Kim Dae-Jung replaced Han with Vice Foreign Minister Choi Sung-Hong before the foreign minister's plane had landed.
Mr Han was blamed for not doing enough in the face of mounting US-North Korean tensions. Mr Han met Mr Powell in New York on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum. US President George W. Bush and President Kim are due to meet in Seoul on February 20. President Kim instructed new Foreign Minister Choi and his national security advisor, Im Sung-Joon, to strengthen the US alliance while ensuring relations with North Korean did not deteriorate. The South Korean leader is hoping for a convincing statement of support from Mr Bush for his rapprochement policy with the Stalinist North.
