Hun Sen's CPP wins first Cambodian local elections
Prime Minister Hun Sen's party has won a landslide victory in Cambodia's first local elections.
But a US pro-democracy group and government opponents say the victors committed so many violations that the polls were neither free nor fair. The Washington DC-based International Republican Institute blames Hun Sen's government and party for the pre-election violations. Unofficial but comprehensive results show members of Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party have won control of all but 21 of the nation's 16-hundred local councils.
Funcinpec, the royalist party led by Prince Norodom Ranariddh and which is junior partner in Hun Sen's coalition government, is battling with the Sam Rainsy Party for control of the few remaining councils.
