Malaysian PM to miss Commonwealth leaders meeting

Malaysia's Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, has told Australia he will NOT attend next month's Commonwealth heads of Government meeting in Queensland.

His deputy will come instead ... as Graeme Dobell reports.

"Dr Mahathir declined the invitation for the summit scheduled for Brisbane in October last year. And it's the same answer now for the rescheduled Commonwealth meeting on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. As with last year, Dr Mahathir is giving no reason for declining to come to Australia. Malaysia's delegation at the Commonwealth summit will be led by the deputy Prime Minister, Abdullah Badawi. In more than 20 years as Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir has made only one formal visit to Australia -- in 1984."
