Delegates arrive in South Sulawesi for Maluku peace talks

Delegates from warring Christian and Muslim factions on the violence-torn islands of Maluku have completed their arrival in the Indonesian city of Makassar to take part in talks to end three years of conflict.

Indonesian government mediator Farid Husain says that the two delegations will be accommodated in separate venues before they leave for the hill resort town of Malino, the venue for the talks.

Representatives of the two sides have already held a string of meetings in Maluku and Makassar in the past few weeks.

The Maluku unrest broke out in Ambon following a trivial dispute in January 1999.

Apart from 5,000 deaths, more than half a million people were forced from their homes.
